By Donald Harris

For the person who has a passion for sewing and quilting, there is no greater joy than going to a fabric store and exploring all the different fabrics. Fondling the soft or crisp fabrics, enjoying the many colors, some contrasting and some blending, and finding that perfect bargain gives a special joy. You might not think you could get the same enjoyment with online discount fabrics, but that is not the case.

Receiving a box in the mail with an assortment of fresh, new fabrics can be as exciting as shopping in a store. It can be addicting shopping online. All the exciting, bright colors and the numerous patterns stir the imagine for what can be done. Some even encourage to match it to a special piece of fabric in your stash.

The cost of obtaining fabrics for your projects is often much less that in the store. There is very little overhead involved, so it will be cheaper. However, shipping may be involved, so beware. Many sites have free shipping but not all do. They often run specials for free postage, however. This can make these purchases very much less.

This method of shopping is more convenient for a number of reasons. One is that you can shop in your pajamas. There is no need to get dressed and prepare for a shopping trip. Just open up your computer and go. There are search terms at most of the websites that make shopping so much easier. Your are able to search by price per yard, type of fabric, usage, color and other terms you may be interested in buying.

Sometimes items are hard to find and you are forced to go from store to store looking for exactly what you want and at a good price. On the computer, you can quickly click to get from site to site to find what you want. You can even save more time by searching and making a list of several sites to check out.

You should take some precautions before shopping online. You should be sure the site will send samples before requiring you to buy. They may charge a small amount for these, at least a postage amount. Also, be sure all costs are listed, such as shipping and handling, and make sure they designate how much is actual postage.

Make sure that they have a return policy that allows you to return an unwanted purchase. If they don't allow it, be sure they list that on their site and be prepared to have to keep what you bought even if it turns out not to be what you wanted. If there is no return allowed, buy a very small amount and check it out before buying a larger amount.

One of the most important things to consider is that they state on their site that they do not store card numbers and personal information. Further, be sure they post their customer service phone number and email addresses, so you can contact them if you are unsatisfied with something or don't receive your order as expected.
