Tips On How To Choose Appropriate Turntable Cartridges

By Scott Cooper

Almost all people really do love listening to music, starting from the past generations until now. Vinyl records are the most common type of musical means back in history. These may have some similarities with the shellac records that are used much earlier before. Until now, vinyl still has remained popular and is very common in DJ community and in high fidelity audiophile community.

One of the most important parts in the process of music listening is to build the stereo system out from the turntable, speakers, component, and amplifier, and as well as from wire, stylus, and other small accessories. Choosing turntable cartridges is very important since these are small components that would hold the stylus. Thus, make sure to choose the right one to provide the need appropriately.

Determine the budget. Phono cartridges are types of stereo systems but are much larger when it comes to their sizes. Make sure that when you allocate the budget, the entire system must be considered. Audiophile cartridges may have expensive prices, especially those that are of high end models. One good suggestion for proper budgeting is to allocate 10 percent of the total expenditures to a cartridge.

Select an appropriate cartridge type for the mount of tonearm. The tonearm is being classified into four categories. These classifications are the standard, P, convertible, and integrated mounts. Make sure that you have chosen a cartridge which is suitable to the type of mount.

The standard or the half inch mounts usually are used very commonly. These are flat and large headshells in which the cartridges sit underneath. P mounts are turntable types considered as low end. Unlike the other types, convertible types are not so common. Lastly are integrated mounts that are using propriety cartridges in which swapping is not allowed with the other models. Common use of these is for the DJ turntables.

Moving magnets and moving coils are the two main and most common cartridge types. Magnetic types are now very common in modern cartridges. The devices are composed of magnets and of small metal coils and these are moving with relation to each other for producing electrical signal. The moving magnet is the commonly used type and is allowed to move while fixing coil. While most of the audio enthusiasts prefer the moving coil.

Different types of cartridge may have different stylus shapes, so better compare them. Styluses are needle like items used for touching a vinyl record. Modern styluses are produced with the use of diamonds and have different shapes and sizes. Prices are often expensive as well. However, cheaper types are also available in spherical shapes and with low quality sounds.

However, these spherical shapes would be necessary for the scratching and the back cuing in DJ turntables. Elliptical styluses can offer a greater contact area, and because of this, lesser amount of tracking force will be required for retrieving recorded information. And the result is higher fidelity and lesser record wear.

Elliptical styluses may also be available for the audiophile DJs. However, scratching may not be recommended. Examples of these styluses are micro lines, linear contacts, and biradials.
