Learn Something About Growing Cycads

By Dorothy Hayes

Beautiful cone-bearing cycads look so attractive and appealing in any home and in any garden, and it is really easy to grow them. You can keep them in simple pots filled with for example cactus soil, in your home, on the terrace or in your garden. When it comes to growing, it is important to make sure they have a good drainage, because their roots might rotten otherwise.

Easy growing cycads makes them really popular among people who aren't experienced in gardening. Cycads grow in sand or hard rock in nature, and these are really old, prehistoric plants that look very attractive both in your home and in your backyard. They don't require too much attention, and will make any garden more interesting, without taking too much space.

Cycads look very similar to some types of palms, but they aren't closely related. In fact, they are actually related to pines. Even so, they really are attractive, both for inside and garden growing, and look very interesting. There are so many species to choose from, probably over three hundred of them, and Sago palm is one of the most popular ones.

These lovely plants are dioecious, and this means that there are male and female plants. Male plants carry cones filled with pollen, while female plants produce seeds. Although these plants really look similar to palms, there is one difference that will help you recognize them. They don't produce flowers and fruits, while palms do. Other than that, they are equally attractive.

When it comes to pot growing, you won't have too much work with cycads. Their growth is slow, and this means that you won't have to change their pots every year, or even every two to three years, as with other plants. Just remember to keep them away from direct heat, but exposed to sun. Water them rarely during winter, and twice a week during hot summer months, that's it.

You can keep them in pots on your terrace, too, but if you want to place them directly in the ground, choose sunny places because they will appreciate a lot of sun. Remember to make sure they have appropriate drainage, this is probably the most important thing about cycads, Their roots are quite sensitive to stale water.

If you are more experienced gardener, you can try growing these beautiful plants from seeds. If not, choose grown plants, larger ones for your garden, and smaller for growing in the pot. So, medium sized are probably the best solution. Remember that they grow slowly, and you would probably want to enjoy their presence as soon as possible. You could also combine smaller and larger ones, why not.

Good fertilizer that contains phosphorus, magnesium and potassium will make a great difference, of course. Commonly used palm fertilizer will be more than appropriate for cycads. Apply four times a year, and you will have really beautiful, luxuriously green plants. With so little effort, you can get so much. Try growing these beautiful plants, it's simple, but really great.
